Fat fines for saving towel space and ignoring red flags

BATHERS who ignore the red flag warning of danger could face fines of up to 1,500 euros.

New by-laws affecting Alicante’s El Postiguet beach mean that anyone who enters the water when the red flag is flying will be sanctioned on the spot.

They could also be fined up to 750 euros for annoying other bathers, bringing pets on to the beach or playing with balls in forbidden areas.

Travelling salespeople will also be subject to these penalties.

Additionally, the rules apply to people who attempt to save themselves a place on the beach by leaving a towel or umbrella unattended.

Fines will be applied for playing radios, stereos or musical instruments too loudly.

Use of barbecues, gas bottles or starting fires will attract penalties of between 750 and 1,500 euros, as will fishing between 9pm and 9am or practising windsurfing or kitesurfing outside of designated areas.

Other beaches along the Costa Blanca have fined bathers ignoring red danger flags in previous years.

When the red flag is flying, lifeguards are not obliged to enter the water to rescue bathers, since they could put their own lives at risk.
